Baldur's Gate 3

Unlock every romance scene and companion questline — Shadowheart, Astarion, Gale, Lae',zel, Wyll, Karlach, Halsin, and Minthara. Approval thresholds and key dialogue flags.

Introduction

Romance in Baldur's Gate 3 is more than just intimate scenes — it's a core narrative system that deepens companion storylines, unlocks unique dialogue, and changes character endings. Every origin companion plus Halsin, Minthara, and the Emperor can be romanced, each with distinct preferences, approval triggers, and relationship milestones. This guide covers every romanceable character, including approval strategies, critical dialogue choices, and how to avoid accidentally locking yourself out of romance paths.

Romance Mechanics Overview

Approval System

  • Range: -50 (hostile) to +100 (exceptional)
  • Thresholds: Medium (20), High (40), Very High (60), Exceptional (80)
  • Most romances trigger at High (40+) approval during Act 1 party or equivalent moments
  • Some companions require specific story flags beyond approval

Partner Exclusivity

  • Most companions are exclusive by Act 2 — flirting with multiple origins locks you into one
  • Halsin and Minthara are exceptions (Halsin is polyamorous, Minthara is not)
  • Some companions accept polyamory with specific others:
    • Shadowheart + Halsin: Accepted
    • Astarion + Halsin: Accepted (Astarion is surprisingly chill about it)
    • Karlach + Halsin: Accepted (but only temporarily — she wants exclusivity eventually)
    • Shadowheart + Astarion: Possible for a period, but one will ask you to choose

Romance "Flags"

A "flag" is a dialogue or scene that sets you on a companion's romance path. Missing a flag means you're locked out. Act 1's party at the Grove is the most common first flag.

Shadowheart

Approval Strategy: Respect her privacy (don't pry about her wound), show kindness to animals and children, oppose the Absolute, respect Selune (ironically), and avoid unnecessary cruelty.

Act 1

ActionApproval
Save Arabella from Kagha+5
Pet Scratch the dog+5
Give her the Idol of Shar (Owlbear Cave statue)+10
Don't interrogate her about her past+5
Be kind to tiefling refugees+5 (multiple instances)
Save the tieflings+5
Don't kill the Owlbear cub+5

Party scene trigger: At the Goblin/Tiefling party, Shadowheart sits alone drinking wine. Dialogue options:

  • "I'll share a bottle with you" → Romance flag
  • "Maybe later" → Friends only

Second flag: In the Underdark, after a long rest, she reveals she can't swim but wants to. Night orchid scene.

Act 2

ActionApproval
Give her a Night Orchid (found in Shadow-Cursed Lands)+10
Don't make her consume the Noblestalk mushroomShe appreciates the choice either way
Trust her in the Gauntlet of Shar+10 (don't interfere with her prayers)

Gauntlet of Shar Decision (CRITICAL):

  • Encourage her to spare Nightsong → Selune path, hair turns white, romance continues, she's freed from Shar
  • Encourage her to kill Nightsong → Dark Justiciar path, romance continues but she becomes more emotionally distant. Darker romance.

Act 3

Complete her personal quest (House of Grief). Free her parents or let them go — both options keep the romance intact.

Romance scene: Beach scene (Long Rest, after the Circus love test scene). The final romance scene is a tender, non-explicit moment on a moonlit beach where she opens up about her feelings.

Tips

  • Shadowheart is the slowest burn romance. Don't expect instant intimacy — her arc is about trust.
  • You can romance her as any gender or race.
  • She's compatible with Halsin if you want a polyamorous arrangement.

Astarion

Approval Strategy: Be sarcastic, support his independence, let him feed on you, don't judge his vampirism.

ActionApproval
Let him bite you (first camp night he sneaks up)+10
Defend him when the others discover he's a vampire+5
Give him the Necromancy of Thay+5
Kill the monster hunter (Gandrel) for him+10
Support his desire for power+5 (multiple)
Be snarky/sarcastic in dialogue+1-3 (frequent)
Accept his scars are a "poem"+3

Act 1 Party

At the party, Astarion is off to the side. Pick the dialogue: "What do you want?" Not "I hope you're having fun". He propositions you mockingly.

Forest scene: Long rest after party. He suggests a night in the woods. Accept → romance flag set.

Act 2

Araj Oblodra (Moonrise Towers): The drow blood merchant wants Astarion to bite her. Crucial: support his choice not to do it. If you force him, he thanks you but loses trust. If you support his refusal, he gains massive respect for you (+10, and a beautiful post-camp conversation).

Raphael / Yurgir: Help him learn about his scars. Kill Yurgir or fulfill Raphael's contract.

Confession scene: After the Yurgir/Araj events, Astarion confesses he was manipulating you at first but caught real feelings. This is the emotional turning point.

Act 3

Cazador's Palace: The ritual. Support Astarion's choice to stop the ritual (don't ascend). Ascending turns him into Vampire Ascendant — powerful but fundamentally changed. His "good" ending is choosing not to complete the ritual.

Tips

  • Astarion can romance any gender/race.
  • He's comfortable with polyamory (Halsin).
  • The romance is particularly meaningful for those playing a "resist dark urge" character — shared themes of breaking free from dark masters.

Gale

Approval Strategy: Be intellectually curious, appreciate magic, be kind to children/animals, avoid unnecessary violence.

ActionApproval
Give him magical items (3 total in Act 1)+5 each
Show interest in his magical talent+5
Don't mock his condition+5
Be kind to tiefling children+5
Save the Grove+5

Act 1

Weave scene: Long rest. Gale offers to show you a magic trick. Follow the Weave scene options. Critical: when the Weave connects, picture something romantic (kissing him, holding hands) or the weave dissolves. Choosing "imagine his head on a spike" (picturing beheading) locks you out.

Party scene: Gale is looking at the Weave. Be flirty. He's awkward but receptive.

Act 2

Elminster scene: Mystra's chosen arrives. Gale is told to sacrifice himself. Support him emotionally.

Stargazing scene: Long rest. Gale creates a magical sky. Major romance scene. He's vulnerable about his relationship with Mystra.

Act 3

The Annals of Karsus (Sorcerous Sundries): Gale learns the Crown is real. He debates using it to become a god.

Boat scene: Gale's personal quest climax. Convince him to seek Mystra's forgiveness and return the Crown, OR encourage his ambition to become a god. The boat scene is the final romance scene — beautifully written, with Gale performing astral projection.

Tips

  • Gale is the most monogamous companion. He wants exclusivity.
  • Romancing him as a Sorcerer or other arcane class adds unique dialogue.
  • His ending varies dramatically based on whether you encourage Mystra's path or his ambition.

Lae'zel

Approval Strategy: Be direct, show strength, respect githyanki culture, be dominant.

ActionApproval
Show strength in combat+1-3 (frequent)
Be direct and assertive in dialogue+3
Support her in githyanki matters+5
Show dominance (she respects it)+5
Let her interrogate Zorru+5

Act 1

First proposition: Very early (around long rest 3-4). She says she wants to "taste" you. Accept = romance flag. She respects strength and directness.

Act 2

Creche Y'llek: Stand by her during githyanki confrontations. Don't let the zaith'isk kill her (pass the checks or pull her out).

Challenge scene: Long rest. She challenges you to a duel (she wants to be dominated). Win the fight but choose to submit to her at the end — showing both strength and vulnerability. This is the emotional turning point.

Act 3

Vlaakith's betrayal: Support Lae'zel in rejecting Vlaakith. Free Orpheus.

Sunrise scene: The final romance scene. Lae'zel watches the sunrise — something she's never experienced on the Astral Plane. Profoundly moving.

Tips

  • Lae'zel is the most aggressive romance. She comes onto YOU.
  • Her romance arc is about learning vulnerability and freedom.
  • If you free Orpheus, she may choose to leave with him on a red dragon to fight Vlaakith. You can join her, or she leaves and the romance ends — a bittersweet conclusion.

Karlach

Approval Strategy: Be kind, protect the innocent, hate slavers and devils, be enthusiastic.

ActionApproval
Help her find Infernal Iron+10 each (need 2)
Kill the "Paladins of Tyr" (Zariel's agents)+10
Be good to tieflings+5
Be enthusiastic/excited+3
Don't side with goblins+5

Act 1

Recruit her, bring her Infernal Iron to Dammon (Druid Grove). First upgrade: she can touch without burning.

Camp scene: Long rest after first upgrade. She's cooling down. You can "try to touch her" → kiss scene. Romance flag set. She literally cools down and you share a kiss.

Act 2

Second Infernal Iron (to Dammon at Last Light Inn). This is critical — if Dammon dies (Isobel kidnapped), Karlach can never be upgraded and the romance cannot advance physically.

Romance scene: Long rest after second upgrade. She can be touched safely. Intimate scene — she's overjoyed.

Act 3

Date scene: Long rest. She takes you on a date in Baldur's Gate — simple, sweet, heartbreaking because of her engine condition.

The decision: Her infernal engine is failing. Options at the end:

  • Return to Avernus with her (you and/or Wyll). She doesn't die but lives in Hell.
  • She dies peacefully on the docks (emotional but accepting).
  • Become a mind flayer — the engine stabilizes, and she lives.

Tips

  • Karlach is the most emotionally open romance. She wears her heart on her sleeve (literally — it's on fire).
  • The tragedy of her situation makes this one of the most emotionally impactful romances.
  • She's initially open to sharing with Halsin but eventually wants exclusivity.

Wyll

Approval Strategy: Be heroic, protect innocents, oppose devils and monsters.

Key Moments

  • Help the tieflings → +10
  • Save the Grove → +10
  • Don't kill innocents → +5
  • Be heroic in dialogue → +1-3 frequent

Dance scene: Long rest, Act 2. Wyll asks you to dance. Accept → romance flag.

Mizora's pact: Support Wyll through his pact decisions. The romance culminates in Act 3 with a proposal (ring scenes).

Halsin

Approval Strategy: Be good to nature, help the Grove, rescue Thaniel.

Halsin's romance doesn't start until Act 3. He propositions you directly. He's polyamorous and doesn't interfere with origin romances. His romance scene involves his Bear form (a deliberate choice, handled tastefully).

Minthara

The only "evil" romance option. Kill the Grove for her. Her romance is purely physical in Act 1, developing emotional depth in Acts 2-3. She's exclusive (no polyamory).

The Emperor

In Act 3, you have the option for a romantic encounter with the Emperor (mind flayer form). It's... memorable. And controversial. It doesn't lock you out of other romances.

There's no "best" romance in Baldur's Gate 3 — each companion's arc explores different themes of trauma, freedom, redemption, and love. Shadowheart's journey from cultist to free woman, Astarion's reclamation of autonomy, Karlach's determination to live fully despite her fate. Pick the story that resonates with you most.
