Genshin Impact Artifact Farming Optimization: Domain Rankings, Strongbox & Stat Probability

By GameGuide Team·Published Feb 12, 2026·Updated Feb 28, 2026

Genshin Impact

Maximize resin efficiency with domain priority rankings, strongbox recycling strategies, and which substats to keep vs. fodder. Includes the 4-piece vs. 2+2 decision guide.

Introduction

Artifact farming is Genshin Impact's most resin-intensive and RNG-dependent endgame activity. On average, a single "perfect" artifact (correct set + correct main stat + 3-4 useful substats with good rolls) requires approximately 2-3 weeks of dedicated resin investment — per piece. Multiplying by 5 artifact slots and 8 characters across two Abyss teams, optimization becomes essential. This guide provides a data-driven framework for maximizing your resin efficiency: which domains to prioritize, how to use the Mystic Offering (Strongbox) system, understanding hidden stat probabilities, and a practical locking strategy to avoid trashing potentially valuable pieces.

All recommendations assume AR 45+ (guaranteed 5-star artifact drop per Domain run at the highest difficulty). Pre-AR 45, use whatever artifacts you collect — save all Fragile Resin for post-AR 45 farming.

Domain Value Ranking

Not all Artifact Domains have equal value. A domain's efficiency depends on how many characters need BOTH sets it drops. Domains where both sets are broadly useful provide twice the value per resin compared to domains where one (or both) sets are niche.

S-Tier: Farm These Daily

1. Momiji-Dyed Court (Inazuma — Yashiori Island)

Sets: Emblem of Severed Fate + Shimenawa's Reminiscence

Emblem UsersShimenawa Users (2pc ATK% only, or 4pc specific)
Raiden Shogun (BIS)Yoimiya (4pc BIS)
Xiangling (BIS in most teams)Hu Tao (4pc alternative to CW)
Xingqiu (BIS)Wanderer (4pc BIS, Shimenawa or DPC)
Yelan (BIS)Any ATK-scaling character (2pc +18% ATK)
Beidou (BIS)
Mona (BIS for Burst support)
Sara (BIS for Burst support)
Dehya (BIS for Burst support)

Verdict: Emblem is the most universally useful 4-piece set in the game, and Shimenawa's 2-piece (+18% ATK) works on almost any ATK-scaler. This domain is the single most resin-efficient farm. Every account should spend 30-50% of their artifact resin here until they have 2-3 good Emblem sets.

2. Spire of Solitary Enlightenment (Sumeru — Avidya Forest)

Sets: Deepwood Memories + Gilded Dreams

Deepwood UsersGilded Dreams Users
Nahida (4pc BIS)Alhaitham (BIS unless 4pc Gilded)
Any Dendro support (Dendro Traveler, Yaoyao, Collei, Kirara)Kuki Shinobu (4pc for Hyperbloom EM)
Baizhu (support build)Yae Miko (Aggravate BIS)
Nilou Bloom teams (one Deepwood holder mandatory)Fischl (Aggravate BIS)
Cyno (BIS)
Tighnari (4pc Wanderer's alternative)
Thoma (Burgeon EM build)

Verdict: Every Dendro team requires at least one Deepwood holder. Gilded Dreams is the go-to EM set for any reaction-based character. With Dendro teams (Hyperbloom, Nilou Bloom, Quicken) being among the strongest comps, this domain's value is second only to Emblem.

A-Tier: Farm With Purpose

3. Denouement of Sin (Fontaine — Beryl Region)

Sets: Marechaussee Hunter + Golden Troupe

Marechaussee UsersGolden Troupe Users
Neuvillette (4pc BIS)Fischl (4pc BIS — 70% Skill DMG)
Wriothesley (4pc BIS)Furina (off-field, 4pc BIS)
Lyney (4pc BIS)Yae Miko (off-field, 4pc BIS)
Gaming (4pc BIS)Albedo (4pc BIS)
Hu Tao (4pc alternative to CW, works extremely well with Furina)Nahida (off-field variant, alternative to Deepwood)
Xiao (4pc BIS with Furina teams)

Verdict: Marechaussee is the de facto DPS set for Fontaine characters. Golden Troupe is the best off-field Skill DPS set. The domain covers 5+ premium characters, making it highly efficient.

4. Peak of Vindagnyr (Dragonspine)

Sets: Blizzard Strayer + Heart of Depth

Blizzard Strayer UsersHeart of Depth Users
Ayaka (4pc BIS)Childe / Tartaglia (4pc BIS)
Ganyu (Freeze, 4pc BIS)Ayato (4pc BIS)
Kaeya / Rosaria (Freeze DPS)Xingqiu (2pc+2pc alternative)
Mona (on-field DPS)

Verdict: Essential for Freeze teams, but Freeze has fallen slightly in the Abyss meta with more unfreezable bosses. Still high value if you main Ayaka or Ganyu. Heart of Depth is increasingly niche as more Hydro characters prefer Emblem or other sets.

B-Tier: Strongbox Instead of Farming

5. Hidden Palace of Zhou Formula (Liyue — Wuwang Hill)

Sets: Crimson Witch of Flames + Lavawalker

Crimson Witch is BiS for Hu Tao and Diluc. However, Lavawalker is nearly useless. Instead of farming this domain, Strongbox your bad 5-star artifacts into Crimson Witch pieces. Farming this domain directly wastes half your resin on Lavawalker.

6. Valley of Remembrance (Mondstadt — Dawn Winery)

Sets: Viridescent Venerer + Maiden Beloved

VV is mandatory for all Anemo supports (Kazuha, Sucrose, Venti, Jean, Lynette, Sayu). But Maiden Beloved is completely obsolete — any healing bonus set is outclassed by Ocean-Hued Clam or 4pc Noblesse. Strongbox all VV pieces instead of farming.

C-Tier: Avoid

7. Clear Pool and Mountain Cavern (Liyue — Mt. Aocang)

Sets: Bloodstained Chivalry + Noblesse Oblige

Noblesse is useful but easily obtained through Strongbox. Bloodstained Chivalry is physical damage only — a largely obsolete damage type. Do not farm.

8. Domain of Guyun / Midsummer Courtyard

Outdated sets (Archaic Petra, Retracing Bolide, Thundering Fury, Thundersoother). Strongbox Thundering Fury for Aggravate teams. Skip farming.

The Strongbox (Mystic Offering) System

At any Crafting Bench, you can convert three 5-star artifacts into one 5-star artifact from a selected set. The available sets rotate and expand with each major version.

Available Strongbox Sets (Version 5.x)

SetPriority to Strongbox
Viridescent VenererHigh — Never farm Valley of Remembrance
Crimson Witch of FlamesHigh — For Hu Tao, skip farming Zhou Formula
Thundering FuryMedium — For Aggravate Keqing/Cyno
Noblesse ObligeMedium — Support set, useful for Bennett/Mona/etc
Blizzard StrayerLow-Medium — Only if you main Freeze teams
Heart of DepthLow — Childe can also use Nymph's Dream
Bloodstained ChivalryLow — Physical is niche
Wanderer's Troupe / Gladiator's FinaleDo not — Acquired passively from bosses
Emblem of Severed FateNOT AVAILABLE in Strongbox as of writing
Deepwood / GildedNOT AVAILABLE in Strongbox

Strongbox Strategy

  1. Farm S-Tier domains (Emblem, Deepwood/Gilded, Marechaussee/GT).
  2. Lock and keep good pieces from both sets.
  3. Take the bad 5-star pieces and Strongbox them into VV or Crimson Witch.
  4. Never Strongbox artifacts that could be off-piece. A bad EoSF piece with double Crit subs could be a perfect off-piece Goblet or Circlet for a character using a different set.

Off-Piece Rule: You only need 4 pieces for a set bonus. The 5th slot (usually Goblet or Circlet) can be from any set. Always keep Elemental DMG% Goblets and Crit Circlets from any set — they are your off-pieces.

Artifact Stat Probability Table

Understanding stat probabilities is critical to managing expectations and knowing when to stop farming.

Main Stat Distribution (Sands / Goblet / Circlet)

SandsProbability
ATK%26.68%
DEF%26.68%
HP%26.68%
Energy Recharge%10.00%
Elemental Mastery10.00%
GobletProbability
ATK%19.25%
DEF%19.00%
HP%19.25%
Physical DMG%5.00%
Elemental DMG% (Pyro/Electro/Cryo/Hydro/Anemo/Geo/Dendro)5.00% each (35% total)

An Elemental DMG% Goblet of a specific element has a 5% drop rate. A double-Crit DMG% Goblet of the correct element and set has an astronomically low probability — this is why off-piece Goblets are the norm.

CircletProbability
ATK%22.00%
DEF%22.00%
HP%22.00%
Crit Rate%10.00%
Crit DMG%10.00%
Healing Bonus%10.00%
Elemental Mastery4.00%

Substats Distribution

Each 5-star artifact starts with 3 or 4 substats (4 is better — saves one roll that would go to revealing a new stat). The probability of each substat appearing is not equal:

SubstatCategoryRelative Probability
ATK%, DEF%, HP%High-weight~13.5% each
Flat ATK, Flat DEF, Flat HPHigh-weight~13.5% each
Crit Rate%Low-weight~7.5%
Crit DMG%Low-weight~7.5%
Energy Recharge%Medium-weight~10.0%
Elemental MasteryMedium-weight~10.0%

Takeaway: Crit Rate and Crit DMG are roughly half as likely to appear as any flat stat. This is the core of artifact farming frustration — not only do you need the correct set, the correct main stat, but your substats are biased against you.

Artifact Locking Decision Tree

When evaluating a 5-star artifact, ask these questions in order. If it passes all checks, lock it. If it fails, feed it to Strongbox.

1. Is the main stat correct?

Goblet: Elemental DMG% or EM (for Anemo/Electro on transformative teams). Lock every Elemental DMG% Goblet regardless of set (off-piece potential).

Sands: ATK% / ER% / EM / DEF% (specific characters: Itto, Noelle C6, Albedo, Chiori, Xilonen) / HP% (specific: Yelan, Hu Tao, Neuvillette, Nilou, Kokomi, Zhongli).

Circlet: Crit Rate% or Crit DMG%. Healing Bonus% (for dedicated healers). EM (for Anemo/Electro transformative). DEF% (Geo DEF scalers).

If main stat is wrong, it's auto-scrap UNLESS it has 4 starting subs with double Crit (extreme off-piece potential).

2. Does it have at least 2 useful substats?

Define "useful" based on the character archetype:

ArchetypeUseful Substats
ATK DPS (Xiangling, Ayaka, etc.)Crit Rate, Crit DMG, ATK%, ER%, EM
HP DPS (Neuvillette, Yelan, Hu Tao)Crit Rate, Crit DMG, HP%, ER%, EM
DEF DPS (Itto, Noelle C6, Chiori)Crit Rate, Crit DMG, DEF%, ER%
EM character (Kuki, Sucrose, Kazuha)EM, ER% (and ER% only)
Support/Healer (Bennett, Kokomi)ER%, HP% (flat HP secondary)

If it has only 1 useful substat at +0, it's scrap material (unless it's a rare main stat like Elemental DMG% Goblet — then roll to +4 and check).

3. Roll to +4. Did it hit a useful substat?

If yes: lock it, keep rolling in +4 increments. Stop when it misses 2 rolls into bad stats.

If no (the +4 went into flat DEF): Strongbox it (unless it's an Elemental DMG% Goblet — those are too rare, keep it as an off-piece).

4. Practical Target Stats

Investment LevelCrit Value (CV = Crit Rate×2 + Crit DMG)Feasibility
Bare Minimum20 CV per piece (100 total)1-2 weeks of farming per set
Good30 CV per piece (150 total)1 month per set
Great35 CV per piece (175 total)2 months per set
Godly40+ CV per piece (200+ total)RNG — could be 6+ months

For most players, 25-30 CV per piece is the practical stopping point. The resin cost to go from 30 CV to 40 CV is approximately 3-5x more than going from 0 to 30 CV.

Resin Allocation Framework

Assuming 180 daily Resin (24 hours of natural regeneration):

Account StageDaily Allocation
AR 45-50 (building 1st team)100% Artifact Domains (Emblem / Deepwood-Gilded)
AR 50-55 (building 2nd Abyss team)60% Artifacts, 20% Talent Books, 20% Weapon Ascension
AR 55+ (optimizing)40% Artifacts, 30% Talent Books (crowning key talents), 20% Bosses (leveling to 90), 10% Mora Ley Lines
AR 60 (endgame min-max)80% Artifacts (only S/A-tier domains), 20% Weekly Bosses

Weekly Boss Priority (always do 3 discounted claims at 30 Resin each):

  1. Narwhal (Neuvillette/Furina/Arlecchino talents)
  2. Shouki no Kami (Nahida + Sumeru characters)
  3. Raiden Shogun / Signora / Apep — based on which talents you need
  4. Dvalin / Childe — lowest priority, strongbox talent conversion available

Condensed Resin: When and How

Craft Condensed Resin at any Crafting Bench using 1 Crystal Core + 40 Original Resin. Maximum 5 at a time.

Always use Condensed Resin for Artifact Domains. It doubles your rewards (2 runs worth of artifacts in 1 run — effectively halving your Domain clear time) and lets you store Resin when you can't play.

Do NOT use Condensed Resin on:

  • World Bosses (Condensed Resin cannot be used)
  • Ley Line Outcrops (unless you specifically need double Mora/EXP books and have capped Condensed Resin)
  • Weekly Bosses (not accepted)

Crystal Core farming: Teleport to Windrise Statue of the Seven at night (after 18:00). There are 5-6 Crystalflies around the tree. Repeat at Dawn Winery, Guyun Stone Forest, and the underground Chasm waypoint. 15 minutes of farming yields 20-30 Crystal Cores.

Artifact Inventory Management

With 1,500 inventory slots and thousands of artifacts dropping per month, a ruthless cleaning routine is essential:

Monthly Cleanup Routine:

  1. Filter by set. Identify sets you never use (Lavawalker, Maiden, Thundersoother, Bloodstained). Strongbox all pieces from these sets EXCEPT Elemental DMG% Goblets and double-Crit pieces.
  2. For sets you use: filter pieces below 20 CV. Unless they're the only piece with the correct main stat, Strongbox them.
  3. Identify duplicates: if you have 3+ ATK% Sands of the same set with similar substat quality, keep the best 2 and Strongbox the rest.
  4. Off-piece review: sort all non-set pieces. Keep only double-Crit pieces and Elemental DMG% Goblets. Strongbox the rest.

Never discard: Elemental DMG% Goblets (any set), EM main stat pieces (any set), double-Crit pieces (any set), ER% Sands with Crit subs (any set). These can always be used as off-pieces.

Elemental Mastery Farming Exception

EM main stat pieces (Sands/Goblet/Circlet) have dramatically lower drop rates than ATK%/DEF%/HP%:

  • EM Sands: 10% (vs 26.68% for ATK%)
  • EM Goblet: 2.5% (vs 19.25% for ATK%)
  • EM Circlet: 4% (vs 22% for ATK%)

If you need full EM builds for Sucrose, Kazuha, Kuki, or Thoma, do NOT expect to farm perfect substats. A full EM set with 0 Crit substats but correct main stats is entirely functional — Swirl, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon damage scale only with EM and character level, not Crit.

EM Farming Strategy: Strongbox excess pieces into Viridescent Venerer for EM main stats. Farm Gilded Dreams domain for EM pieces directly (Deepwood set also benefits from EM for Nahida). Accept that EM Circlets and Goblets will almost certainly be off-pieces.
