Hogwarts Legacy: Room of Requirement Complete Guide
The Room of Requirement is Hogwarts Legacy's player housing and crafting hub. More than just a cosmetic space, it is the engine for potion brewing, plant cultivation, beast care and breeding, gear upgrading via the Loom, and personalized decoration. This guide covers every functional station, the Vivarium ecosystem, beast breeding mechanics, all potion recipes, and optimal room layout strategies.
Unlocking the Room of Requirement
The Room of Requirement becomes accessible during the main story, after completing "The Map Chamber" quest and reaching roughly Level 18. Professor Weasley introduces you to the Room and Deek, the house-elf who serves as your guide throughout the Room's upgrade path.
Upon first entry, the Room is a blank slate — a large, empty hall with rough stone walls. Professor Weasley teaches you the Conjuring Spell, Altering Spell, and Evanesco, the three Transfiguration spells exclusive to this space.
Functional Stations Overview
Potion Stations
Potion Stations are where you brew consumable potions. Each potion has a brewing time and requires specific ingredients.
Small Potion Station (1 slot): Brews a single potion at a time. Cost: 8 Moonstone to conjure. Limit 3 per Room.
Medium Potion Station (2 slots): Brews two potions simultaneously. Cost: 12 Moonstone. Limit 2 per Room.
T-Shaped Potion Station (3 slots): Brews three potions simultaneously. Cost: 16 Moonstone. Limit 1 per Room. Recommended: Conjure this as your primary brewing station for maximum efficiency. With all three sizes, you can brew up to 3+2+2+1=8 potions at once.
Potting Tables
Potting Tables are where you grow combat plants and ingredients.
Small Potting Table (2 plant slots): Cost: 6 Moonstone. Limit 3. Best for small plants (Dittany, Fluxweed).
Medium Potting Table (3 plant slots): Cost: 10 Moonstone. Limit 2. Best for medium plants (Shrivelfig, Knotgrass).
Large Potting Table (5 plant slots): Cost: 14 Moonstone. Limit 1. Best for large plants (Venomous Tentacula, Mandrake) and bulk-growing all types.
Potting Table with Large Pots (2 large pots): Cost: 12 Moonstone. Limit 2. Required for large plants specifically (Venomous Tentacula, Mandrake).
Potion Ingredients Station
Hoop Drying Rack: Produces random potion ingredients over time. Cost: 6 Moonstone. Limit 3.
Stacked Pots: Produces random potion ingredients. Cost: 6 Moonstone. Limit 3.
Cutting Board Station: Produces random potion ingredients. Cost: 6 Moonstone. Limit 2.
These passive ingredient generators provide a trickle of common ingredients (Dittany Leaves, Horklump Juice, Mallowsweet Leaves, etc.). They supplement wild gathering but should not be your sole source.
The Loom (Gear Upgrading)
The Loom is the gear upgrading station. Unlocked via Deek's quest "The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom." At the Loom, you:
- Upgrade Gear: Spend gold to increase a gear piece's base stats. Maximum upgrade level scales with gear rarity.
- Weave Traits: Apply passive bonus Traits to gear slots. Requires beast materials.
The Loom is not a conjurable station — it is permanently placed on the left wall of the Room and cannot be moved.
The Desk of Description
The central desk in the Room serves as your Field Guide interaction point. It shows your challenge progress and allows you to claim challenge rewards. It cannot be moved or changed.
Conjuration Cost Moonstone Management
Moonstone is the resource used to conjure items. You find Moonstone deposits as glowing rock formations throughout the open world. Each deposit yields 5–15 Moonstone. Additionally, you can purchase Moonstone from Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade.
Your maximum Moonstone capacity increases as you progress the Room of Requirement storyline. Pro tip: Evanesco refunds the full Moonstone cost when you vanish a conjured item. Redesign your Room freely — there is no resource penalty.
The Vivarium — Magical Beast Sanctuary
The Vivarium is a separate biome accessible through a door in the Room of Requirement. You unlock the first Vivarium (the Forest biome) during the introductory beast-care questline with Deek.
Vivarium Biomes
There are four Vivariums, each representing a different ecosystem:
| Vivarium | Biome | Unlock Method | Max Species |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forest Vivarium | Temperate forest with pond | Deek's introductory quest | 4 species |
| Coastal Vivarium | Beach with cliffs and ocean | Complete "The Plight of the House-Elf" side quest | 4 species |
| Swamp Vivarium | Murky wetlands | Complete "The Plight of the House-Elf" side quest | 4 species |
| Grasslands Vivarium | Open plains with mountains | Reach Level 30 and complete Deek's final quest | 4 species |
Each Vivarium holds up to 12 individual beasts across a maximum of 4 species. This means you can have up to 48 total beasts across all four Vivariums (12 per Vivarium × 4 Vivariums).
Capturing Beasts — The Nab-Sack
The Nab-Sack is obtained during Deek's introductory quest. It functions as a magical creature capture device:
- Approach a beast in the wild (beasts are marked on the map by paw print icons).
- Use the Disillusionment Charm to approach undetected (beasts flee if they see you).
- Cast Levioso or Arresto Momentum on the beast to immobilize it.
- Activate the Nab-Sack by holding the capture button. A meter fills — release when complete.
- The beast is added to your collection. Visit the Vivarium and release it into your chosen biome.
Beast Care and Happiness
Beasts produce crafting materials every 25 minutes of real-time play. To keep them happy and productive:
- Beast Feeder: Place in the Vivarium. Beasts eat automatically, which fills their happiness meter.
- Beast Toybox: Place in the Vivarium. Beasts play with toys, further increasing happiness.
- Brushing: Approach a beast and use the brush action (unlocked with the Nab-Sack). Brushing maximizes happiness and prevents beasts from getting dirty.
A happy beast produces higher-quality materials and, in the case of breeding, healthy offspring. Unhappy beasts still produce materials but at a reduced rate.
Beast Breeding
Breeding is unlocked after completing "The Plight of the House-Elf" side quest and achieving a beast happiness level of maximum across the parents. The Penning Paddock is conjured in the Vivarium.
How to Breed
- Conjure a Breeding Pen in any Vivarium (cost: 15 Moonstone).
- Select one male and one female of the same species. Both must be in the same Vivarium.
- Both beasts must have maximum happiness (fully brushed, fed, and played with).
- Wait 30 minutes of real-time play. A notification appears: "An offspring has been born."
- Claim the offspring from the Breeding Pen. It appears as a juvenile version of the species.
Breedable Species
All 13 magical beast species can be bred:
| Beast | Material Produced | Vivarium Preference | Special Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puffskein | Puffskein Fur (Trait I) | Forest | Most common — breed early for Trait materials |
| Jobberknoll | Jobberknoll Feather (Trait II) | Forest | Essential for mid-game Trait crafting |
| Mooncalf | Mooncalf Fur (Trait I) | Forest | Only appears at night in the wild |
| Kneazle | Kneazle Fur (Trait III) | Forest | Essential for endgame Trait III weaving |
| Niffler | Niffler Fur | Coastal | Cute — coin-themed cosmetics |
| Diricawl | Diricawl Feather | Coastal | Teleporting bird — hard to catch |
| Fwooper | Fwooper Feather | Coastal | Singing beast — unique melody |
| Giant Purple Toad | Toad Wart (Trait II) | Swamp | Excellent jumper |
| Thestral | Thestral Hair | Swamp | Only visible after witnessing death in story |
| Unicorn | Unicorn Hair | Grasslands | One spawn point only — Forbidden Forest den |
| Hippogriff | Hippogriff Feather | Grasslands | Highwing (from story) + wild variants |
| Graphorn | Graphorn Horn (Trait III) | Grasslands | Lord of the Shore — only one wild spawn |
| Phoenix | Phoenix Feather | Grasslands | One per save file — quest reward only |
Graphorn: The Graphorn is the only beast that fights back during capture. You must engage in a short boss battle with the Lord of the Shore (found in the southern Clagmar Coast region) before you can capture him. Graphorn Horns are essential for Trait III crafting — prioritize capturing and breeding Graphorns.
Phoenix: Only one Phoenix exists per save file. You obtain it during the "Phoenix Rising" side quest. The Phoenix cannot breed — it is the sole member of its species. Its Phoenix Feather material is unique and regenerates every 30 minutes. Do not sell it.
Unicorn: Only one wild Unicorn spawn point exists — in the Forbidden Forest den area, and only at night. The Unicorn is skittish and flees extremely quickly. Use Disillusionment + Arresto Momentum with precise timing.
Combat Plants
Chinese Chomping Cabbage
- Seed Source: Dogweed and Deathcap, Hogsmeade (600 Gold).
- Grow Time: 10 minutes (small pot).
- Effect: Thrown like a projectile. The cabbage chases and attacks the nearest enemy, dealing continuous physical damage. With the Fertiliser Talent, each throw sends 2–3 cabbages. Upgraded with Noxious, they break shields. A full inventory of 12 cabbages can solo an Infamous Foe.
Mandrake
- Seed Source: Dogweed and Deathcap, Hogsmeade (800 Gold).
- Grow Time: 15 minutes (large pot).
- Effect: When used, the Mandrake emits a piercing scream that stuns and deals damage to all enemies in a large radius. With the Headache Talent, the scream also breaks all enemy shields. Essential for interrupting large groups and disabling shielded enemies.
Venomous Tentacula
- Seed Source: Dogweed and Deathcap, Hogsmeade (1,200 Gold).
- Grow Time: 15 minutes (large pot).
- Effect: Deployed as a stationary turret. Automatically spits venom at nearby enemies. With the Noxious Talent, its attacks break enemy shields. Place two Tentaculas in a choke point and watch enemies melt before reaching you.
Fluxweed and Shrivelfig
- Seed Source: The Magic Neep, Hogsmeade (350 / 450 Gold).
- Grow Time: 10 / 15 minutes.
- Effect: Potion ingredients (Focus Potion and Invisibility Potion respectively). Not used in combat directly.
All Potion Recipes
Potions are brewed at Potion Stations. All recipes are obtained through main story progression, side quests, or purchase from J. Pippin's Potions in Hogsmeade.
| Potion | Ingredients | Brew Time | Effect | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wiggenweld Potion | Horklump Juice + Dittany Leaves | 15 sec | Restores health (~25% HP) | Instant |
| Edurus Potion | Ashwinder Eggs + Mongrel Fur | 30 sec | Greatly increases defence; rock-like skin | 20 sec |
| Focus Potion | Lacewing Flies + Fluxweed Stem + Dugbog Tongue | 60 sec | Reduces spell cooldowns significantly | 30 sec |
| Maxima Potion | Leech Juice + Spider Fang | 60 sec | Increases spell damage | 30 sec |
| Invisibility Potion | Leaping Toadstool Caps + Knotgrass Sprig + Troll Bogeys | 60 sec | Turns you invisible for a short time | 20 sec |
| Thunderbrew Potion | Stench of the Dead + Leech Juice + Shrivelfig Fruit | 90 sec | Creates a storm aura around you; shocks and stuns nearby enemies | 30 sec |
| Felix Felicis | Lacewing Flies + Fluxweed Stem | 120 sec | Reveals large chests on the minimap (crafting-only, PlayStation pre-order bonus originally) | 1 game day |
Brewing Tips:
- Wiggenweld Potions are your lifeline. Always have 25 (max capacity) before major story missions.
- Focus Potion + Maxima Potion stacked provides a 30-second window of massively increased spell output. Drink both before boss encounters.
- Edurus Potion makes you immune to stagger and knockback — essential for troll fights.
- Thunderbrew Potion passively clears weak enemies (spiders, Inferi) without you casting a single spell.
Room Layout Optimization
The Efficient Crafting Setup
For players who care about function over form:
- Place all Potion Stations along the left wall (near the Loom for easy access when upgrading gear).
- Place all Potting Tables along the right wall.
- Place all ingredient generators (Hoop Racks, Stacked Pots, Cutting Boards) in the back corners.
- Leave the center open for easy movement between stations.
- Place Moonstone Refiners (if available) near the entrance for quick deposit/collection.
Decoration and Ambiance
The Room of Requirement has a surprisingly deep decoration system:
- Wall coverings, flooring, and ceiling fixtures change the entire ambiance of the Room.
- Portraits, statues, and furniture are unlocked by finding Conjuration recipes in Collection Chests across the world.
- Lighting fixtures (candles, chandeliers, lanterns) dramatically change the mood.
- Ambiance spells can be cast on the Room to set the time of day or weather (inside — purely cosmetic).
- Conjured chairs and tables are interactive — you can sit in chairs you create.
The decoration system is entirely optional but offers hundreds of hours of creative expression. Conjuration recipes are the primary reward from side activities (Butterfly Chests, Treasure Vaults, Collection Chests), encouraging exploration.
Room Upgrades and Expansions
As you progress the main story and Deek's side quests, the Room of Requirement expands:
- Initial Room: Blank room with basic conjuration. Access to Forest Vivarium (1 species).
- First Expansion: Room size increases. Access to 2nd Vivarium. Loom becomes available.
- Second Expansion: Room size increases again. Access to 3rd Vivarium. Breeding Pen becomes available.
- Final Expansion: Maximum room size. All 4 Vivariums accessible. All stations and decorations available.
Each expansion roughly coincides with the completion of a Keeper Trial and Deek's associated quest trigger. Prioritize Deek's quests whenever they appear — they directly unlock core progression systems (Loom, Vivariums, Breeding).
Summary
The Room of Requirement is not optional side content — it is the backbone of your character's power progression. Potions, plants, and Traits are all sourced from this room. A well-organized Room with active brewing, growing, and beast care provides a constant stream of combat resources that make even Hard difficulty encounters manageable. Invest time in your Room early, and it will pay dividends throughout your Hogwarts Legacy journey.
