Introduction
Bleed (Hemorrhage) is arguably the most powerful status effect in Elden Ring. Each bleed proc deals percentage-based damage — approximately 15% of the target's maximum HP plus a flat 100-200 damage depending on your weapon — making it devastating against bosses with massive health pools. This guide covers the optimal Bleed build at every stage of the game, from the moment you step into Limgrave to endgame Malenia-slaying setups.
How Bleed Works
Bleed Buildup is applied with each hit from a weapon that has innate Bleed or is infused with the Blood affinity. When the invisible Bleed meter fills, the target takes:
- 15% of max HP (bosses) plus flat damage
- 30% of max HP (standard enemies)
- A brief stagger animation
Higher Arcane increases Bleed buildup IF the weapon has Arcane scaling. At 45 Arcane, bleed buildup values roughly double compared to base Arcane.
Bleed-Immune enemies: Radagon, Elden Beast, Valiant Gargoyles, Erdtree Avatars, Putrid Avatars, Burial Watchdogs, Skeletons, Spirit-Caller Snails, Crystallians. Against these, fall back on pure physical damage.
Optimal Bleed Build at Level 150
Stat Spread
| Stat | Value | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Vigor | 60 | Softcap, 1900 HP |
| Mind | 15 | Enough for Corpse Piler spam and occasional incantations |
| Endurance | 25 | Medium roll with medium armor |
| Strength | 12 | Minimum for Rivers of Blood (12) and most katanas |
| Dexterity | 40 | Softcap for Physical damage scaling |
| Intelligence | 9 | Base, no Int needed |
| Faith | 15 | Minimum for Flame Grant Me Strength (+20% physical/fire) |
| Arcane | 50 | Primary scaling stat, maximizes Bleed buildup |
Primary Weapon Loadout
| Slot | Weapon | Affinity | Bleed Buildup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Hand | Rivers of Blood +10 | Somber (fixed) | 55/hit + Corpse Piler |
| Off Hand | Blood Uchigatana +25 | Blood | 85/hit at 50 Arcane |
Power-stance L1 combo: Both katanas hit simultaneously, applying 55+85=140 Bleed per L1. Most bosses proc in 3-5 L1 combos.
Alternative Weapons by Stage
| Stage | Weapon | Bleed | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | Reduvia | 50/hit | Nerijus invasion, Agheel Lake North |
| Early | Bloodhound's Fang | 55/hit | Forlorn Hound Evergaol (Bleed + Somber upgrade) |
| Early | Uchigatana (Blood affinity) | 55/hit (base Arc) | Starting (Samurai) or Death-Touched Catacombs |
| Mid | Eleonora's Poleblade | 55/hit | Bloody Finger Eleonora, Second Church of Marika, Altus |
| Mid | Godskin Peeler (Blood affinity) | 48/hit (base) | Godskin Apostle, Windmill Village |
| Late | Nagakiba (Blood affinity) | 82/hit at 50 Arc | Bloody Finger Hunter Yura questline |
| Late | Scavenger's Curved Sword x2 | 45/hit each | Mt. Gelmir, corpse near ladder |
| Endgame | Rivers of Blood | 55/hit | Bloody Finger Okina, Mountaintops |
| Endgame | Morgott's Cursed Sword | 60/hit | Remembrance of the Omen King |
Dual Scavenger's Curved Swords (Highest Bleed DPS)
At 50 Arcane with Blood affinity, each curved sword applies ~85 Bleed per hit. Power-stance jumping L1 hits 4 times, applying 340 Bleed instantly. Combined with the curved sword's fast running attacks and the multi-hit nature of jump L1s, this setup has the highest Bleed application rate in the game.
Talismans
| Slot | Talisman | Effect | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lord of Blood's Exultation | +20% AR for 20s on Bleed proc | Leyndell Catacombs (boss: Esgar, Priest of Blood) |
| 2 | Rotten Winged Sword Insignia | +6%/8%/13% on successive hits | Millicent questline (help her at Windmill Village) |
| 3 | Millicent's Prosthesis | +5 Dex, +4%/6%/11% attack boost | Kill Millicent at Windmill Village (or complete quest) |
| 4 | Shard of Alexander | +15% weapon skill damage | Complete Alexander's questline (Farum Azula) |
Armor
| Piece | Item | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Head | White Mask | +10% AR for 20s when Bleed procs nearby |
| Chest | Raptor's Black Feathers | +10% jump attack damage |
| Arms | Any medium (stay under 70% equip load) | - |
| Legs | Any medium | - |
Total synergy: Bleed proc triggers White Mask (+10%) + Lord of Blood's Exultation (+20%). Successive attack hits trigger RWSI + Millicent's stacks. Corpse Piler's multi-hit weapon art stacks RWSI and Millicent's to max in one cast.
Flask Distribution
- Crimson Tears: 10
- Cerulean Tears: 4 (Corpse Piler costs 6 FP per cast, goes a long way)
- Wondrous Physick: Thorny Cracked Tear (+successive attack damage) + Dexterity-knot Crystal Tear (+10 Dex)
Incantations (15 Faith minimum)
| Incantation | Faith | FP | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flame, Grant Me Strength | 15 | 28 | +20% physical + fire damage, 30s |
| Bloodflame Blade | 12 | 20 | Adds fire damage + 40 Bleed buildup over 2s |
| Bestial Vitality | 12 | 18 | 5 HP/s regen for 120s |
Combat Strategy & Rotations
Pre-Fight Buff Sequence
- Switch to offhand Finger Seal
- Cast Golden Vow (if 25 Faith) or Flame, Grant Me Strength
- Apply Bloodflame Blade (only on non-Somber weapons)
- Drink Wondrous Physick
- Switch to dual katana power-stance
- Enter fog gate
In-Fight Priority
- Opening: Jump L1 (4 hits with dual curved swords). Applies 300+ Bleed.
- Spam: Corpse Piler L2. Each cast hits 6+ times. After 2-3 casts, Bleed procs.
- On Bleed Proc: Boss staggers briefly. Use this window for a charged R2 or another Corpse Piler.
- When FP is low: Switch to L1 combos. Jump L1 deals excellent poise damage.
- Against Bleed-immune bosses: Respect the limitations. Corpse Piler still deals fire/physical damage — it's just slower. Use jump attacks for poise breaks.
Ash of War: Seppuku
If using non-Somber weapons, Seppuku (Ash of War from frozen lake, Mountaintops of the Giants) can be equipped on your offhand weapon. Using it costs 50 HP and applies +30 Bleed buildup and +30 physical damage for 60 seconds. The self-damage also triggers Lord of Blood's Exultation and White Mask, giving you +30% AR before the fight starts.
Optimal Seppuku setup: Blood Uchigatana +25 with Seppuku. Use it, then switch to Rivers of Blood. The Seppuku buff persists on the offhand weapon while you Corpse Piler with the main hand.
Weapon Upgrade Priority
| Priority | Weapon | Upgrade Path | Somber Stone Locations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rivers of Blood | +6 after arrival, +9 after Mountaintops, +10 (Ancient) from Mohgwyn | Somber 7: Volcano Manor; Somber 8/9: Dragonbarrow, Caelid |
| 2 | Blood Uchigatana | +25 eventually | Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 1-4 (Leyndell/Crumbling) |
| 3 | Dragon Communion Seal | +10 if using incants | Somber stones (same priority as Rivers) |
Leveling Progression
| Level Range | Priority | Target |
|---|---|---|
| 1-30 | Vigor to 25, Arcane to 17 | Reduvia + Uchigatana |
| 30-50 | Vigor to 35, Dex to 18 | Eleonora's Poleblade / Bloodhound's Fang |
| 50-80 | Arcane to 35, Vigor to 40 | Godskin Peeler, Seppuku |
| 80-100 | Arcane to 45, Dex to 30 | Rivers of Blood, Morgott's Cursed Sword |
| 100-125 | Vigor to 50, Arcane to 50 | Endgame setup |
| 125-150 | Endurance to 25, Dex to 40, Faith to 15 | Complete build |
Boss-Specific Tips
| Boss | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Malenia | Corpse Piler spam. She staggers from every hit. Two casts + bleed proc deletes 30% HP. Mimic Tear with the same setup doubles bleed output. |
| Mohg | Bleed on the blood lord! Proc bleed 3-4 times during NIHIL channel. He's ironically one of the easiest Remembrance bosses for bleed builds. |
| Fire Giant | Target the wrapped ankle. Bleed procs for ~15% of his massive HP bar = 3,000+ damage per proc. |
| Godskin Duo | Bleed works on both. Proc bleed separately on each. Sleep one with pots, bleed the other. |
| Maliketh | Phase 1 bleed is very effective. Phase 2 Maliketh is highly mobile — bring frost pots to slow him. |
| Radagon | IMMUNE to bleed. Fall back on pure physical Corpse Piler damage. Switch to Occult affinity if possible. |
| Elden Beast | IMMUNE. Use Black Flame Tornado or Pest Threads instead. |
Physick Tear Options
| Tear | Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Thorny Cracked Tear | +successive attack damage | Every fight, stacks with RWSI |
| Dexterity-knot Crystal Tear | +10 Dex for 3min | Boss fights |
| Opaline Bubbletear | Damage negation bubble | Malenia, Maliketh, Radagon |
| Crimsonwhorl Bubbletear | Converts elemental damage to HP | Mohg (NIHIL), Fire Giant (fire) |
| Leaden Hardtear | Perfect poise for 10s | Opening burst with Corpse Piler |
With this build at Level 150, you'll proc Bleed on Malenia every 4-5 seconds, delete Mohg before his second NIHIL, and make short work of every bleed-susceptible boss in the Lands Between.
