Introduction
Sorcery in Elden Ring offers the highest single-target burst damage potential in the game, capable of one-shotting or "one-cycling" many Remembrance bosses. The mage playstyle excels at range, allowing you to clear dungeons without trading hits and defeat bosses without learning complex dodge patterns. This guide covers the optimal Intelligence-based sorcery build from Limgrave to the Elden Throne.
Why Play a Mage?
- Highest burst damage: Comet Azur with infinite FP tear deletes bosses before they reach you
- Safest playstyle: Kill enemies from outside their aggro range
- Versatile: Rock Sling for magic-resistant enemies, Night Comet for input-reading bosses
- FP-efficient: Carian Slicer costs 4 FP and out-damages most melee weapons
- Exploration-friendly: Loretta's Greatbow snipes enemies across entire zones
Optimal Pure Intelligence Build at Level 150

Spell Deep Dive
Comet Azur: The Boss Deleter
Setup:
- Drink Physick (Cerulean Hidden Tear + Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear)
- Cast Terra Magica at your feet
- Optional: Cast Ranni's Dark Moon for the 30% magic defense debuff
- Hold L1 to channel Comet Azur
- The beam deals continuous damage as long as you hold it and have FP
This combo deletes Mohg (both phases) before he reaches you, kills Morgott in 8 seconds, and one-cycles the Putrid Avatar, Cemetery Shade, and other stationary bosses.
Night Comet: The Anti-Boss Tool
Most bosses are programmed to dodge when the player casts a projectile spell. Night Comet is invisible to enemies — they don't register it as a threat and won't dodge. Casting with Staff of Loss in offhand (+30% damage) makes this the best single-target spell against Malenia, Maliketh, and any dodge-heavy boss.
Rock Sling: Physical Damage & Stagger
Deals pure physical damage, making it essential against magic-resistant enemies (Rennala phase 2, Adula, Crystalians). Each cast throws 3 rocks. With the Meteorite Staff (boosts gravity sorceries by 30%), each rock hits ~400 damage at 80 Int. 2-4 casts poise-break most bosses.
Shard Spiral vs Large Bosses
Shard Spiral travels slowly through large targets, hitting multiple times. Against Placidusax, Elden Beast, Astel, and Fire Giant, each cast deals 3,000+ damage because the spiral passes through their massive hitboxes.
Carian Slicer: Melee DPS King
At 80 Int with Carian Regal Scepter, Carian Slicer deals ~600-700 damage per cast and chains at melee speed. It costs 4 FP. This gives it the highest damage-to-FP ratio in the game, rivaling pure melee builds. Use it when enemies close distance or for FP-efficient dungeon clearing.

Early Game Rush Route
Step 1: Get the Meteorite Staff + Rock Sling (Level 1-15)
Sprint to Caelid via the Third Church of Marika teleporter (behind the church, near water). The portal takes you to Bestial Sanctum. From there:
- Ride Torrent south past the dragon on the bridge
- Continue south-southwest to the Street of Sages Ruins
- The Meteorite Staff is on a corpse in a window alcove (western building)
- Rock Sling is in a chest in the basement of the same ruins
These items require 0 boss fights and can be obtained immediately after getting Torrent. The Meteorite Staff has S Intelligence scaling and cannot be upgraded, making it the strongest staff until 60+ Intelligence with a +7/+8 Academy Glintstone Staff.
Step 2: Memory Stones for Early Spell Slots
- Roundtable Hold: Twin Maiden Husks sell one for 3,000 runes
- Oridys's Rise (Weeping Peninsula): Kill 3 ghost turtles to unlock, chest on top
- Converted Fringe Tower (Liurnia northeast): Requires Erudition gesture (Thops quest)
- Lenne's Rise (Dragonbarrow, Caelid): Run past the ball trap, grab from the tower
Step 3: Key Sorcery Pickups
| Sorcery | Location | Min Level |
|---|---|---|
| Carian Slicer | Sellen, Waypoint Ruins (give Royal House Scroll) | 1 |
| Terra Magica | Academy Crystal Cave, Liurnia (boss: Crystalians) | 30 |
| Night Comet | Sellia, Town of Sorcery (chest behind seal) | 30 |
| Comet Azur | Mt. Gelmir, speak to Primeval Sorcerer Azur (north of Hermit Village) | 50 |
| Loretta's Greatbow | Caria Manor, Royal Knight Loretta boss drop | 40 |
| Ranni's Dark Moon | Chelona's Rise, Moonlight Altar (Ranni questline) | 70 |
| Shard Spiral | Sellen questline completion | 60 |
Flask Distribution
| Stage | Crimson | Cerulean | Logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 30 | 4 | 4 | More Cerulean = more spell casts |
| Level 60 | 6 | 6 | Equal split as FP pool grows |
| Level 90 | 8 | 6 | You need healing but have larger Mind |
| Level 150 | 8 | 6 | +14 total flasks (all Golden Seeds) |
Common Mistakes & Tips
- Don't ignore Vigor. 50 Vigor is mandatory by endgame. Mages die in 1-2 hits otherwise.
- Use the right staff for the situation. Lusat's for nuking with infinite FP. Carian Regal Scepter for everything else. Meteorite for Rock Sling.
- Terra Magica before every boss fight. 35% more damage for 30 seconds is the difference between one-cycling and running out of FP.
- Night Comet against Malenia and Maliketh. They can't dodge it. Never cast Pebble against input-reading bosses.
- Rock Sling from horseback. You can cast sorceries while mounted. Rock Sling on Torrent trivializes field bosses.
- Flask allocation matters. By endgame, you can have 14 Flasks at +12. An 8/6 split gives you 8 heals and 1320 FP.
- Memory Stones max at 10 slots. There are 8 Memory Stones total (plus 2 base slots). All are accessible before Leyndell.
With this build, you'll one-cycle Mohg, melt Morgott, outrange Malenia, and make every field boss trivial. The Lands Between is yours, sorcerer.
