Introduction

The Archon Quests form the main storyline of Genshin Impact, spanning six major chapters across the continent of Teyvat. As of Version 5.x, the Traveler's journey covers Prologue (Mondstadt) through Chapter V (Natlan), with each chapter featuring unique exploration mechanics, Domain challenges, and increasingly complex boss encounters. This comprehensive walkthrough covers every Archon Quest arc, the Adventure Rank (AR) gates you'll encounter, critical boss strategies, and the Domain challenges that gate your progress through each nation.

Throughout all chapters, you control the Traveler and interact with the seven Archons of Teyvat while uncovering the mysteries of your lost sibling and the Cataclysm that reshaped the world 500 years ago. Each chapter introduces new elemental mechanics—starting with Anemo and ending with Pyro—and progressively deepens the combat system through Domain tutorials.

Prologue: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind (Mondstadt)

AR Requirement: None (starts immediately). Total Acts: 3.

Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind

You awaken on a beach after a confrontation with an unknown god. Your sibling is gone, and you are stranded. Paimon finds you and leads you to Starfell Valley. Your first objective is reaching Mondstadt, the City of Freedom.

Key Encounters:

  • Tutorial Domain: Temple of the Lion: Introduces basic controls, Anemo Traveler abilities, and puzzle mechanics. You'll fight Hydro Slimes and a large stone gate puzzle. Switch characters (Amber joins you here) and use her Pyro arrows to solve Candles puzzles.
  • Stormterror Encounter: After reaching the Statue of the Seven at Windrise, Dvalin attacks. This is a cutscene fight — no actual combat required.
  • Entering Mondstadt: Meet Amber at the city gate. She teaches you about Gliding. Complete her Gliding certification (three courses) to unlock free exploration of the city.

Act II: For a Tomorrow Without Tears

Knights of Favonius introduces the three Temples: Temple of the Falcon, Temple of the Wolf, and Temple of the Lion.

Domain Strategy — Temple of the Falcon (Kaeya's Trial):

  • Use Cryo on water surfaces to create ice bridges for shortcut navigation.
  • Final chamber contains a Cryo Abyss Mage. Kaeya's Cryo is ineffective; use Amber's Pyro to break its shield (8-10 charged shots).
  • Kaeya's Elemental Skill (Frostgnaw) generates Energy Particles quickly — alternate between Kaeya and Amber for consistent Freeze setups against Hydro Slimes.

Domain Strategy — Temple of the Wolf (Lisa's Trial):

  • Lisa's normal attacks apply Electro. Use Pyro from Amber first (applying Pyro), then switch to Lisa for Overloaded (knocks enemies back, always deals Pyro AoE).
  • Large Hydro Slimes: Lisa's charged attacks + Elemental Skill tap trigger Electro-Charged, stunning them.
  • Final boss: Ruin Guard. Target the glowing eye with charged shots (Amber). Eye hits stagger it. Then unleash Lisa's Violet Arc (hold version) for massive AoE Electro damage.

After completing all three Temples, Kaeya, Lisa, and Amber officially join your party permanently.

Act III: A Long Shot — and the Stormterror Confrontation

The final confrontation with Dvalin. You must complete the Confront Stormterror Domain.

Boss: Stormterror Dvalin:

  • Phase 1 — Airborne: Dvalin flies around the platform. Use Anemo Traveler or Venti (if pulled) to target the glowing Anemo clots he shoots. Destroying them deals significant damage. Alternatively, climb onto Dvalin's back when he slams his claws onto the platform — use the wind currents to glide up.
  • Claw Phase: Once you destroy his shield, Dvalin crashes his claws onto the platform. Target the purple crystal on his claw. Once broken, Dvalin's neck falls down — climb onto his spine and attack the purple spike on his nape. This is the critical weak point.
  • Phase 2 — Corrupted: At ~60% HP, Dvalin summons platforms that emit continuous Anemo damage. Move between safe platforms quickly. The attack pattern repeats: claw attacks → climb → strike weak point. Repeat 2-3 times.
  • Recommended Team: Amber (range), Lisa (superconduct setup with Kaeya), Kaeya (Cryo application), Barbara (healing from story-acquired). No fifth slot available here.

Upon defeating Dvalin, the Prologue concludes. You receive the Windrise story card and unlock the Wish system fully. AR 18 is required to begin Chapter I.


Chapter I: Farewell, Archaic Lord (Liyue)

AR Requirement: 23, then 25, then 28 (acts). Total Acts: 4.

Act I: Of the Land Amidst Monoliths

Arriving in Liyue Harbor during the Rite of Descension. You meet Zhongli (working at Wangsheng Funeral Parlor) and Childe (Fatui Harbinger). The Geo Archon Rex Lapis's vessel falls from the sky during the Rite — declared dead.

Qixing Investigation: You must visit three Adepti to collect their responses:

  • Moon Carver (Jueyun Karst): Navigate the mountain paths. Amber torches light the way; use Pyro to keep them lit through the mist.
  • Cloud Retainer (Mt. Aocang): Requires solving a platform puzzle. Step on the glowing geo symbols in the order they light up. Failure resets all switches.
  • Mountain Shaper (Hulao): Accessed via a domain trial. Defeat Stonehide Lawachurls using Superconduct (Cryo + Electro) to shred Physical resistance.

Act II: Farewell, the Archaic Lord

Zhongli arranges the Rite of Parting. Your tasks:

  • Collect 3 Noctilucous Jade (found in Mingyun Village mines, glowing blue ore nodes).
  • Purchase Perfume from Ying'er (Scent of Spring shop in Liyue Harbor); dialogue choices affect minor dialogue only.
  • Acquire Wild Glaze (talk to Madame Ping, then find the Glaze Lily in Qingce Village).
  • Prepare the Golden House ritual items (automatic quest progression).

Domain: The Golden House Entrance Trial:

  • Two waves of Treasure Hoarders and Fatui Skirmishers.
  • Fatui Pyro Agent: Use Hydro to strip his Pyro shield. Barbara's normal attacks work well.

Boss: Childe (Tartaglia, Eleventh Harbinger) — AR 25+ recommended: Childe has three phases, each with distinct movesets.

Recommended Team: Xiangling (Pyro), Kaeya (Cryo), Noelle (Geo shield), Barbara (Hydro heal). Freeze via Kaeya + Barbara works well in Phases 1-2. Vaporize Xiangling's Pyronado to burst down Phase 3.

Act III: A New Star Approaches

The Jade Chamber sequence. You help Ningguang rebuild the Jade Chamber (contribute materials — White Iron Chunks, Crystal Chunks, and a Plaustrite Shard from a mining expedition). The Tianquan's forces fight against the resurrected Osial (Overlord of the Vortex).

Domain: Jade Chamber Defense (Act III climax):

  • Protect the Guizhong Ballista (3 nodes). Fatui waves attack from 3 directions. Prioritize Anemoboxer Vanguards (they pull you in with their vacuum attack).
  • Use Geo Traveler to block pathways (Starfallen Sword creates barriers that Fatui cannot walk through).
  • Final wave: 2 Ruin Guards. Same strategy as Temple of the Wolf: target eyes, stagger, burst down.

Boss: Osial (Overlord of the Vortex) — QTE and Ballista:

  • This is not a direct boss fight. You fire the Jade Chamber's Guizhong Ballista at Osial's heads (3 heads activate sequentially). Aim at the glowing cores. Each head requires 3 direct hits. Adepti provide shield support between shots.

Act IV: We Will Be Reunited

AR 28 required. Zhongli reveals he is Rex Lapis (Geo Archon). You enter the Domain of the Heretic beneath the Golden House, facing Abyss Heralds and a confrontation with your sibling.

Boss: Abyss Herald (Hydro): This is the story climax boss. Hydro Abyss Heralds use spinning blade attacks and Hydro shields.

  • Use Cryo (Kaeya, Chongyun) to Freeze and break the Hydro shield. Kaeya's Elemental Burst (Glacial Waltz) applies continuous Cryo.
  • When the Hydro Herald enters his cross-slash attack, dodge back twice — the follow-up spin catches forward dodges.
  • Shield break takes priority over HP damage. Once the Hydro shield is down, the Herald is trivial.

Post-Chapter I: You receive the Memory of Geo key item. AR 30 unlocks Chapter II. Spiral Abyss floors 1-8 become available for clearing.


Chapter II: Omnipresence Over Mortals (Inazuma)

AR Requirement: 30. Total Acts: 4. Must complete Chapter I Act IV and reach AR 30.

Act I: The Immovable God and the Eternal Euthymia

Arrive on Ritou Island (Inazuma). The Sakoku Decree locks you in — you cannot leave via the waverider until Act III. Meet Thoma and Kamisato Ayaka.

Key hurdles:

  • Ritou Escape: Register at the border checkpoint, then visit three local merchants. Deliver 600 Mora (or substitute items) to the Kanjobugyo officer for a Travel Permit.
  • Kamisato Estate Audience: Ayaka tasks you with helping three citizens who lost their Visions. Each has a minor combat encounter against Nobushi or Kairagi.
  • Domain: Shakkei Pavilion — Pyro puzzle chambers. Light torches with Pyro in the correct spiral pattern. Final boss: Pyro Hypostasis. Bring Hydro characters — Barbara and Xingqiu destroy the Pyro shield phase.

Act II: Stillness, the Sublimation of Shadow

You meet the Raiden Shogun for the first time. Thoma's Vision is seized. You escape via Thoma's spear distraction.

Domain: Factory of the Vision Hunt Ceremony:

  • Electro puzzles: step on floor panels to redirect Electro currents. Seelie guides show the correct sequence.
  • Combat waves: Nobushi, Kairagi, and Mirror Maidens. Mirror Maidens trap you in Hydro bubbles — switch characters to break free. Use Cryo + Pyro Melt for Kairagi (they have high HP and heal after their comrade dies — kill them simultaneously).

Act III: Omnipresence Over Mortals

The Resistance arc on Watatsumi Island. You meet Sangonomiya Kokomi and Gorou. The Resistance plans to assault the Delusion Factory.

Key Story Beats:

  • Teppei's Death: Witness the consequences of Delusion usage. Teppei rapidly ages and dies. This is the emotional catalyst for your confrontation with the Fatui.
  • Delusion Factory Raid: Fight waves of Fatui (Cryo Cicin Mage, Mirror Maiden, Pyro Agent). Use the Scaramouche lead-up.
  • Yae Miko's Intervention: She offers training to resist Raiden's Musou no Hitotachi. Complete her training Domain (Electro totem puzzles — align three totems simultaneously using coordinated attacks).

Boss: La Signora (Crimson Witch of Embers) — the Eighth Harbinger:

After Signora's defeat, the Raiden Shogun executes her via Musou no Hitotachi. You then face:

Boss: Raiden Shogun (Initial): You cannot damage Raiden in the first encounter. Dodge her attacks for ~45 seconds while the screen accumulates Electro charge. After Yae Miko's intervention and the Vision Hunt Decree abolition, you enter the Plane of Euthymia for the real fight.

Boss: Raiden Shogun (Plane of Euthymia): Raiden uses the Musou no Hitotachi (instant-kill slash). Yae reveals a Training Domain mechanic — you must complete the Domain to remove her Electro shield. In the final sequence, all confiscated Visions' ambitions power your attack. The fight is narrative-driven; gameplay-wise, dodge her combos (3-slash, 5-slash, 360-degree sweep) and wait for the story sequence.


Chapter III: Truth Amongst the Pages of Purana (Sumeru)

AR Requirement: 35. Total Acts: 6 (longest chapter).

Act I: Through Mists of Smoke and Forests Dark

You arrive in Sumeru via the Chasm. Meet Tighnari in Avidya Forest. The Withering Zones are the main environmental threat.

New Mechanic — Decay (Withering):

  • Withering Zones drain your Decay meter when inside. Collect Dendrograna (green floating spirits) to enter the zone safely.
  • Destroy Withering Branches (3 per zone) with Dendrograna-charged attacks. Each destroyed branch reduces the Decay rate.
  • Defeat the Tumor of the Withering (red glowing core) to purify the zone. Use Pyro attacks on the Tumor after all branches are destroyed.

Domain: The Dark Valley — Introduces Dendro reaction puzzles. Use the Dendro Traveler (resonated at the Statue of the Seven in Sumeru) to trigger Bloom (Dendro + Hydro → Dendro Cores). Cores explode after 6 seconds or instantly with Electro (Hyperbloom) or Pyro (Burgeon).

Act II: The Morn a Thousand Roses Brings

The Sabzeruz Festival — a timeloop story. You relive the same day repeatedly. Key NPCs: Nilou, Dunyarzad, Dehya.

Investigation Phases:

  • Each loop, gather different information from festival attendees. The "correct" answers emerge over 3-4 loops.
  • Pay attention to the Akademiya researchers (they hold key knowledge).
  • The samsara (loop) is broken by entering the Grand Bazaar and talking to Nilou during the dance sequence — the connection to Nahida (Lesser Lord Kusanali) is revealed.

Act III: Dreams, Emptiness, Deception

You work with Alhaitham and Cyno to uncover the Sages' conspiracy. The Akademiya is using the Akasha Terminals to harvest dreams for their god-creation project.

Domain: Akademiya Infiltration:

  • Stealth sections: avoid the patrolling Eremites. Use the environment (bookcases, pillars) as cover.
  • Combat: waves of Eremite Desert Clearwater, Eremite Sunfrost, and Eremite Daythunder. These enemies have elemental auras — use corresponding counter-elements.

Act IV: King Deshret and the Three Magi

The Scarlet King's tomb exploration in the Hypostyle Desert. This is a massive area with multiple Primal Obelisks.

Desert Mechanics:

  • Primal Obelisks: Restore them with Sacred Seals (found in the desert from puzzles). Each restored obelisk reveals nearby treasure locations and World Boss arenas.
  • Clearance Levels: Desert ruins have 4 Clearance levels. You gain Clearance through the Golden Slumber questline (required for full exploration, not required for Archon Quest completion).

Act V: Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises

The climax. You ally with the Eremite forces (Rahman and his followers) and raid the Akademiya.

Boss: Scaramouche (Shouki no Kami) — Final Boss of Sumeru: A two-phase fight with unique mechanics.

After the fight, Nahida is freed, the Akasha is dismantled, and Sumeru's Archon Quest concludes. You receive the Memory of Dendro.


Chapter IV: Masquerade of the Guilty (Fontaine)

AR Requirement: 40. Total Acts: 6.

Act I: Prelude of Blancheur and Noirceur

Arrival in Fontaine via Romaritime Harbor. Meet Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet. You are immediately involved in a murder trial at the Opera Epiclese.

New Mechanic — Arkhe (Pneuma & Ousia):

  • Fontaine characters and puzzles use Pneuma (light) and Ousia (dark) energies. Opposite energies create an Annihilation reaction (powerful true damage + stun on mechanical enemies).
  • Puzzles require matching Ousia blocks with Pneuma receivers and vice versa.

Domain: Opera Epiclese Investigation — Point-and-click investigation mechanics. Examine evidence, interview witnesses, and present contradictions. Fighting segments are minimal in Act I.

Act II: As Light Rain Falls Without Reason

The Marcel/Vacher serial disappearances case. You work with Navia (Spina di Rosula) to investigate the Poisson serial disappearances.

Key Combat: Hydro Tulpa — Boss variant in a flooded arena. The Tulpa splits into smaller Tulpas at 50% HP. Use Dendro (Bloom/Hyperbloom) for sustained AoE damage.

Act III & IV: To the Stars Shining in the Depths (Meropide Fortress)

You enter the Fortress of Meropide (underwater prison). Wriothesley is the Duke. You work undercover to investigate the Primordial Sea leak.

Underwater Exploration: No original stamina system — Aquatic Stamina replaces it. Fontemer Aberrants (enemies) include Armored Crabs (use Xenochromatic creature abilities to break armor), Blubberbeasts (absorb their echo attacks), and Hunter's Rays (use their blade projectiles to cut seaweed barriers).

Act V: The Opera of Noirceur and Blancheur

Furina's trial at the Opera Epiclese. The Hydro Archon Focalors is revealed to have split her divinity from her humanity (Furina). The Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale delivers the death sentence.

Boss: The All-Devouring Narwhal (Phase 1):

  • Shadow-based boss. Uses shadow projectiles and a dive attack from the darkness. The arena has no edges — the whale breaches through and returns.
  • Use Pneuma/Ousia to stagger it. Navia (trial) and Neuvillette (trial, temporarily overpowered) trivialize the fight.

Boss: The All-Devouring Narwhal (Phase 2) — Inside the whale's stomach:

  • Fight the Narwhal's core. Use Neuvillette's charged attack (Equitable Judgment) to break the core's shield. Charged attacks while the Narwhal is stunned deal massive damage.

Act VI: The Final Feast

Skirk appears and reveals the truth about the Gnosis and the Third Descender. The Narwhal is a pet of Surtalogi, one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah. Neuvillette regains his full Hydro Dragon Authority.


Chapter V: Incandescent Ode of Resurrection (Natlan)

AR Requirement: 45+. Total Acts: 5+ (ongoing as of Version 5.x).

Act I: Flowers Resplendent on the Sun-Scorched Sojourn

You arrive in Natlan via the desert border. Meet Kachina, Mualani, and Kinich. The Night Warden Wars are introduced — Natlan's unique combat event.

New Mechanic — Nightsoul's Blessing:

  • Natlan characters have a Nightsoul state (indicated by a flame bar). While active, they consume Phlogiston (Natlan-exclusive energy) for enhanced attacks and traversal.
  • Saurian Indwelling: Possess Saurian creatures (Tepetlisaur/Rock, Koholasaur/Water, Yumkasaur/Grapple) for unique movement and combat abilities — used heavily in Natlan exploration and domains.

Domain: Night Warden War Tutorials — Three trials teaching Saurian combat and Phlogiston management.

Act II: Black Stone Under a White Stone

The pilgrimage to the Stadium of the Sacred Flame. You meet Mavuika (Pyro Archon) and participate in the tournament preliminaries.

Act III & IV: The War Against the Abyss (Ochkanatlan exploration into final battle)

Natlan's Archon Quest culminates in a massive war against the Abyss. You fight alongside all six tribes (Children of Echoes, Scions of the Canopy, People of the Springs, Flower-Feather Clan, Masters of the Night-Wind, Collective of Plenty).

Key Sections:

  • Ochkanatlan: The corrupted region in Natlan's north. Environmental hazard: Phlogiston depletion zones (Nightsoul state drains faster). Use the special Saurian companions.
  • Captain (Il Capitano): The First Fatui Harbinger appears as an ally against the Abyss. His constellation involves Ororon and the Masters of the Night-Wind.

Final Boss (Chapter V): The Abyss-corrupted entity known as the Lord of the Night — details vary based on Version 5.x updates. The fight uses Natlan-exclusive mechanics involving Phlogiston surpluses and coordinated Saurian attacks.

Domain Challenge Strategy by Tier

Weapon Ascension Domains: Farm on their corresponding days only. Use the Domain's ley line disorder to your advantage — for example, Cecilia Garden (Monday/Thursday, Mondstadt weapons) applies Slowing Water (increased skill cooldown). Bring a cleanser (Bennett, Jean).

Talent Book Domains: Prioritize farming the talent books for your Main DPS first. A Main DPS at 8/8/8 talents does ~30% more damage than at 6/6/6. Narukami Island (Inazuma talent books) is the only domain gated behind a separate world quest (Tatara Tales).

Artifact Domains (AR 45+): Always farm at the highest difficulty (Level 90). Use Condensed Resin (crafted with 1 Crystal Core + 40 Original Resin) to double rewards per run. The most efficient domains are discussed in our Artifact Farming Optimization Guide.


Critical Tips for All Archon Quests

  1. AR Gates: Never let your Adventure Rank bottleneck your story progress. Complete Daily Commissions and spend Resin daily. The jump from AR 35 to AR 40 is the longest — use Fragile Resin on Ley Line Outcrops if needed.

  2. Weekly Bosses: After completing each Archon Quest chapter, you unlock a new weekly boss (Dvalin, Childe, Signora/Raiden, Scaramouche/Apep, Narwhal). Farm these weekly for Talent Level-Up Materials; they cost 30/60/90 Resin at 0/3/6+ claims per week.

  3. Character Trials: Every Archon Quest provides trial characters for story-critical domains. Use them — they're well-built and demonstrate intended mechanics.

  4. Save Fragile Resin: Do not spend Fragile Resin before AR 45. Pre-45, artifact domains do not guarantee 5-star drops, making Fragile Resin highly inefficient.

  5. Statue of the Seven: Activate every Statue in each new region immediately. For Mondstadt and Liyue, maxing the Statues grants significant Stamina increases (+100 total across both regions).

  6. Elemental Resonance: Your party composition triggers resonance bonuses. Running two Pyro characters (+25% ATK) helps throughout the story. Two Anemo characters reduce stamina consumption by 15% and increase movement speed by 10% — great for exploration sections between combat.
