Cyberpunk 2077: Romance, Companions, and Relationship Endings
Overview
Cyberpunk 2077 features four romanceable characters, each with specific gender/voice/body-type requirements, multi-quest relationship arcs, and unique ending conditions. Romance is not merely a side feature — your romantic partner's questline directly determines which base game endings are available, and your relationship status affects dialogue, epilogue scenes, and even gameplay bonuses (apartment interactions, gifts, and messages).
This guide covers every romance path in detail: requirements, critical dialogue choices, date mechanics, conflict resolution, and how each romance interacts with the five endings. Spoilers are marked where necessary.
Panam Palmer (The Nomad)
Requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Body type | Male (masculine voice and body type) |
| Voice | Male V only |
| Lifepath | Any |
| Questline | Must complete Ghost Town, Lightning Breaks, Life During Wartime, and Queen of the Highway |
| Key attribute checks | None — Panam's romance is purely dialogue-driven |
Quest Chain
Ghost Town: Meet Panam at the Sunset Motel. During the conversation after recovering her car, choose: "I'm just looking out for you" and "It's sweet that you worry." Avoid dismissive or purely transactional responses. At the motel after Nash, select "You're not alone, Panam."
Lightning Breaks: After the Kang Tao scouts at the power station, Panam offers you a drink by the campfire. Select: "To Panam" during the toast and "Maybe you should stay" when she mentions leaving the Aldecaldos.
Life During Wartime: This is the critical quest. After the AV crash, when Panam is arguing with Saul at the camp, side with Panam. Tell Saul: "Panam saved your life" and "She's right about Kang Tao." In the quiet moment afterward with Panam on the cliff, choose: "You can count on me."
Queen of the Highway: The romance-trigger quest. Help Panam steal the Basilisk tank from the Militech convoy. During the calibration sequence inside the Basilisk, Panam reaches for V's hand. Select: "I want to touch you too" to trigger the romance scene. Any other choice locks you out permanently.
Relationship Dynamics
Once romanced, Panam texts V regularly with mission updates, complaints about Saul, and flirtatious messages. You can invite her to any of V's apartments — she arrives, comments on the decor, and you can sleep together (applying a temporary +20% health XP bonus). She occasionally leaves gifts: an Aldecaldo jacket in the stash and her rifle Overwatch if you didn't take it during Riders on the Storm.
Ending Conditions
Panam's romance is required for The Star ending. If you're in a relationship with Panam and choose the Aldecaldo path, she accompanies V out of Night City and the epilogue shows the two of you starting a new life together. If you choose The Sun ending, Panam breaks up with you during the voicemail montage — she won't wait for V if V chooses the merc life over the clan.
In The Tower ending (Phantom Liberty new ending), Panam refuses to speak to V. Her voicemail reveals she's moved on and does not want to reopen old wounds.
Judy Alvarez (The Techie)
Requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Body type | Female (feminine voice and body type) |
| Voice | Female V only |
| Lifepath | Any |
| Questline | Must complete Automatic Love, The Space In Between, Disasterpiece, Double Life, Both Sides Now, Ex-Factor, Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution, Pisces, and Pyramid Song |
| Key attribute checks | None — Judy's romance is purely dialogue-driven |
Quest Chain
Automatic Love through Double Life: These four quests are mandatory to establish Judy's trust. During Disasterpiece, show compassion toward Evelyn — Judy is watching your reactions. After Evelyn's death, choose: "She didn't deserve this" and "I'm sorry, Judy."
Both Sides, Now: Judy calls V to the rooftop of her apartment building after Evelyn's funeral. This is a make-or-break conversation. Select: "She mattered to you" and "You did what you could." Avoid: "She's in a better place" (Judy finds this dismissive) or "It was just a job" (this locks you out).
Ex-Factor: Maiko (Judy's ex) offers to take over Clouds from the Tyger Claws. During the confrontation at Clouds, side with Judy over Maiko. If you accept Maiko's money or agree to her plan, Judy's trust resets to zero and romance is locked. After the Clouds outcome is resolved, Judy asks V to meet her at the lake.
Pyramid Song: The romance quest. Judy takes V scuba diving to her childhood town of Laguna Bend, now submerged beneath a reservoir. During the dive, Judy shares her most personal memories. In the control room after the dive, Judy asks: "Is this real to you or just a distraction?" Choose: "It's real. What we have is real" to trigger the romance. Any other option ("Just a distraction" or hesitation) permanently locks romance.
Relationship Dynamics
Judy, post-romance, is the most emotionally invested partner. She texts frequently, sends selfies from her apartment, and gifts V the Mox shotgun in her apartment stash. She's the only romance partner who visibly moves in — her belongings appear in V's apartment after Pyramid Song. If V has multiple apartments, Judy comments on each one differently.
Ending Conditions
The Star: If romanced and V chooses the Aldecaldo ending, Judy joins V and Panam on the road. She leaves Night City behind — this is widely considered her "good ending" as she's wanted to leave the city since the start.
The Sun: Judy leaves V a voicemail ending the relationship. She's moved to Pittsburgh, gotten married, and explicitly says V was "a beautiful chapter, but a chapter that's closed."
Temperance: If Johnny takes the body, his epilogue shows him visiting Judy to tell her V is gone. Judy is devastated but ultimately accepts it. Johnny leaves her a message that V loved her.
The Tower: Judy has completely moved on. She's married with a family in Pittsburgh and politely but firmly tells V not to contact her again.
River Ward (The Detective)
Requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Body type | Female (feminine voice and body type) |
| Voice | Female V only |
| Lifepath | Any |
| Questline | Must complete I Fought the Law and The Hunt |
| Key attribute checks | None |
Quest Chain
I Fought the Law: Meet River through the Peralez investigation. He's investigating the death of Mayor Rhyne and enlists V's help. During the stakeout at the warehouse, River shares details about his nephew Randy. Choose supportive dialogue: "You're a good uncle, River."
The Hunt: The romance quest. River asks V for help investigating the disappearance of his nephew, Randy. The investigation leads to a serial kidnapper's farm on the outskirts of Night City. After rescuing Randy from the farm, River invites V to a family dinner. At the dinner, after the kids go to bed, River and V sit together on the water tower. Choose: "I want to see where this goes" and then kiss him to trigger the romance.
Important: You must complete The Hunt before the point of no return (Embers). If you reach Nocturne Op55N1 without completing it, the quest is permanently missed.
Relationship Dynamics
River's post-romance content is the most domestic. He invites V to his trailer for family dinners, sends texts about Joss and the kids, and gifts V a revolver (Crash) in the stash. The apartment interactions with River are cozy — he cooks, plays guitar, and sleeps with his arm around V. He's the "settle down" option, contrasting sharply with Johnny's chaotic lifestyle.
Ending Conditions
The Star: River is supportive but stays in Night City with his family. The voicemail is warm — he says he'll be waiting when V comes back from Arizona.
The Sun: River's voicemail is pained. He says he can't keep waiting for someone who's always chasing the next gig. It's effectively a breakup.
The Tower: River's fate is the bleakest of any romance partner. He's imprisoned — charged with corruption during his police career. His voicemail to V from prison is heartbreaking. He says he doesn't blame V but he can't be the man V remembers.
Kerry Eurodyne (The Rockerboy)
Requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Body type | Male (masculine voice and body type) |
| Voice | Male V only |
| Lifepath | Any |
| Questline | Must complete Holdin' On, Second Conflict, A Like Supreme, Rebel! Rebel!, and Boat Drinks |
| Key attribute checks | None |
Quest Chain
Kerry's questline unlocks late — after completing Tapeworm (the Pacifica motel scene), Chippin' In, and Blistering Love. He's the most missable romance because his questline is nested behind Rogue's and Johnny's quest chains.
Holdin' On: Johnny asks V to check on Kerry. Kerry's mansion in North Oak has been vandalized by the Us Cracks superfan. After clearing the vandals, talk to Kerry on the balcony. Choose: "You've still got it, man" and "Johnny talked about you."
Second Conflict: Help Kerry confront the remaining original Samurai members. At the meetup, side with Kerry against the band members who want to sell out.
A Like Supreme: The Samurai reunion gig. Perform on stage with Kerry. During the rooftop conversation after the show, Kerry asks V what the performance meant to them. Select: "It was incredible" and "You killed it up there."
Rebel! Rebel!: Kerry's midlife-crisis quest. Help him destroy a Us Cracks tour bus with a Molotov cocktail launcher. This quest is absurdly fun — enjoy it.
Boat Drinks: The romance quest. Kerry invites V to his yacht, the SEAWRAITH, anchored off the coast. During the sunset scene on the deck, Kerry leans in. Choose: "Let's do this" to kiss him and trigger the romance.
Relationship Dynamics
Kerry's romance is the most casual and "rock-and-roll" of the four. He texts song lyrics, sends selfies from recording studios, and gifts V a gold-plated baseball bat. Apartment visits with Kerry involve him playing guitar, drinking, and being melodramatic about his legacies. He's older, famous, and self-aware about the absurdity of the relationship — and that's the charm.
Ending Conditions
The Star: Kerry's voicemail is bittersweet but supportive. He says Night City won't be the same without V but he gets it.
The Sun: Kerry and V continue their relationship. Kerry joins V for the Crystal Palace heist preparations, and the final scene implies they're a power couple in Night City's elite circles.
The Tower: Kerry is touring in Europe. His voicemail is distant — he's moved on to a younger rockstar and treats V more like a fond memory than a current partner.
Dating and Apartment Mechanics
Once a romance is active, you can invite your partner to any of V's apartments (the original Watson apartment, the Japantown apartment, the Corpo Plaza apartment, or the Glen apartment). Each apartment triggers unique dialogue based on the location. Sleeping with your partner applies a temporary XP bonus (20% to a random skill) for 60 in-game minutes.
Partners will also periodically leave gifts in V's stash:
- Panam: Overwatch sniper rifle, Aldecaldo Rally Bolero jacket
- Judy: Mox shotgun, various braindance wreaths
- River: Crash revolver, NCPD badge replica
- Kerry: Gold-plated baseball bat, vinyl records
Multiple Romance Conflict
The game allows you to pursue multiple romances simultaneously, but this triggers a confrontation. If you romance both Panam AND Kerry (male V) or Judy AND River (female V), your partners will discover the overlap during specific quest milestones and confront V.
For male V: Kerry discovers the Panam romance during Boat Drinks and calls V out on it. You must choose one — the other permanently locks.
For female V: River discovers the Judy romance after The Hunt's dinner scene. Judy discovers the River romance after Pyramid Song. Both partners demand exclusivity. Choosing one locks the other out permanently.
There is no way to maintain both romances. The game treats simultaneous pursuit as a betrayal, and the locked partner's dialogue turns cold for the remainder of the game, though they remain available for their respective quest completions.
Romance and Endings Matrix
| Romance | The Star | The Sun | The Devil | Temperance | The Tower |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panam | Together on the road | Breaks up (voicemail) | No contact (Arasaka station) | Johnny visits her | Refuses contact |
| Judy | Together on the road (joins clan) | Breaks up, married in Pittsburgh | No contact | Johnny visits her | Married, moved on |
| River | Waiting in Night City | Painful breakup (voicemail) | No contact | Johnny visits him | In prison |
| Kerry | Bittersweet goodbye | Together, Crystal Palace | No contact | Johnny visits him | Touring Europe, distant |
Optimal Romance Path Per Playthrough
For achievement hunters: you can romance all four characters across two playthroughs (one male V, one female V) or four separate saves from the point of no return.
Single-playthrough efficiency: Male V can romance Panam AND Kerry if you complete Panam's questline first (Queen of the Highway triggers romance early in Act 2), then complete Kerry's questline (unlocks much later in Act 2/early Act 3). The conflict scene triggers during Boat Drinks — you can experience both romances and then choose at the conflict point.
Female V can do the same with Judy and River. Complete Judy's questline first (Pyramid Song triggers after Pisces), then River's (The Hunt is available earlier but Pyramid Song's timing is flexible).
